This is the first of a mini-trilogy by a new writer and shows again that science fiction is not just about science. Part of the enjoyment is sharing the author's enthusiasms for football (one club above all), American popular music (especially the two decades following WW II) and politics (one political philosophy, but spanning at least two centuries and continents). Over the three novellas - look out for "Only Time Will Tell" and "Out of Time" as the sequels - historic figures from these three areas provide plot lines for the attractions (and the risks) of time travel.Michael Green - a quantum physicist who hits practical as well as theoretical problems with the time dimension in Einstein's equations - is a protagonist with puppy-like vitality, chasing after every sub-atomic particle. His girlfriend, Ann, provides an anchor to common sense. But even she is forced by Michael's impetuousness to accept that time travel is not just theoretically plausible but has become a personally unavoidable aspect of a universe which J B S Haldane famously observed "is not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose".
So, as well as grappling with the fundamental issues of theoretical physics, this is a roller-coaster of counter-factual history. Enjoy the journey through space and time, but make sure you know how to come back to the present.
